History

The Okanagan and Shuswap Railroad
The railway came to Mara in 1892 with the completion of the line from Sicamous to Okanagan Landing. Before then, transportation was by way of paddle wheeler on the Shuswap River, and by stagecoach, which ran along the west side of Mara Lake. The arrival of trains made it easier for local sawmills and farms to ship out their products and for residents to travel and take delivery of freight.

Train Stations of the Okanagan and Shuswap Railway
Stations were constructed in every town and village along the rail line. In rural places like Mara, where the population never exceeded a few hundred, these facilities were modest and functional. Even so, Mara's station buildings were a very important feature of village life until the 1950's when passenger traffic was discontinued. The early Mara Station was used for freight and as a waiting room. One can still see initials carved in the woodwork by waiting passengers.
